How long for a PhD?
Here’s a thing: the Guardian are reporting that it takes significantly longer to complete a PhD in some universities than in others. They report significant differences in the completion times according to a range of factors, including race and gender. What they don’t say, is the universities themselves create a degree of expectation about completion times. It took me just under seven years to complete a part-time PhD at the best university in the world whereas at the university where I teach now you can do a part-time one in under four years. Perhaps students up here are nearly twice as intelligent?
